Spindel and Superspindel

Spindel and Superspindel are two forms of espalier orchard training suitable for recently introduced varieties, characterized by low vigor and now widely adopted, especially in Central and Northern Europe. They are characterized by high planting densities, which for many crops now exceed 3,000 plants/ha in the Spindel systems and 6,000 plants/ha in Superspindel.

Pruning is designed to control tree growth, making management easier and allowing trees to reach full production sooner. The orchard is established using prestressed reinforced concrete posts with a section of 9×9.5 or 10×12 cm at the ends and 7×8 or 8×8.5 cm for intermediate posts.

The distance between the posts varies depending on plant height, expected yield and root growth. It is possible to use spacer brackets, positioned around 80 cm above the ground, which support the wires required to properly arrange the growth of the fruiting branches.
